Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops MAC Freedom Opener at FDU-Florham
MADISON, N.J. – Three players scored in double figures for the Wilkes University women's basketball team as it opened Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play at FDU-Florham with a 90-59 loss Wednesday night.
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) led the Lady Colonels with 15 points and
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) both added 10 points.
With the loss Wilkes fell to 3-7 overall and 0-1 in MAC Freedom games while FDU-Florham improved to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Freedom.
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) made a layup with 1:28 left in the first quarter to pull the Lady Colonels to within four points at 12-8 before the Devils finished the quarter by scoring five of the final six points to lead 17-9.
Wilkes went on a scoring run of 8-1 over a stretch of 1:15 of action in the second quarter to make the score 34-20. The offense was provided by Sofranko who made two three-pointers and two free-throws in the stretch. For the game Sofranko went a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc.
FDU-Florham would regain control and led 42-22 at the half and stretched its lead throughout the second half.
Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) recorded a career-high seven rebounds and added three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Kelsey Yustat (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) had a career-high four assists and
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) scored seven points and had four rebounds and three assists.
The Devils were led by the two leading scorers in the MAC Freedom. Kendrea Williams scored 26 points while Gabrielle Harris put in 23. Bria Smith scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds and Kayla Croswell had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Colonels return to the Marts Center to host their first home conference game of the season when they welcome in Manhattanville on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
