Defense Takes Over Offense as Wilkes Women's Soccer Wins at King's

WILKES-BARRE – The defense led the way on offense as Megan Lercara (Plains, PA/James M. Coughlin) and Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) notched goals in the second half to lead the Wilkes University women's soccer team a 2-1 win over King's College in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Wednesday evening.

The Colonels remained perfect in conference play at 3-0-0 and improved to 6-4-1 overall.

King's entered halftime with a 1-0 lead after a 34th minute goal, but Wilkes led the way in shots 6-2 and corners 6-0 over the first 45 minutes.

Lercara evened the score in the 55th minute following a corner kick from Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) that Lercara was able to knock in off the post and past the Monarchs keeper, extending her career high for goals in a season.

The score remained even until the 84th minute when Wilkes was awarded a penalty kick that Egan was able to convert and send the Colonels to the victory. Egan also extended her career-high in goals for a season to three.

Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) earned her third consecutive win making three saves.

Wilkes dominated the shot count with 19 compared to six for King's, with 12 hitting their target while only four found the net for the Monarchs. The Colonels took the count in corners as well 11-1.

Wilkes returns to the pitch on Saturday when it travels to Eastern for a 12:00 p.m. game.
