Wilkes Women's Soccer Dominates Manhattanville on Senior Day
EDWARDSVILLE – On a day where the seniors were honored with a pregame ceremony for their contributions, the class combined for eight total points as the Wilkes University soccer team put forth a dominating effort against Manhattanville College in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freeom) action, winning by a 6-0 final at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The goal total is the highest single-game number the team has reached all season; the last time the team reached that number was on September 16, 2013, when Wilkes defeated then-Baptist Bible 7-0.
The Colonels improved to 5-1-0 in conference and 8-6-1 overall following the game.
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) got Wilkes on the board in the fourth minute with an unassisted goal that proved to be the game winner.
Towlen aided the Colonels in their second score when she beat her defender sprinting down the left side of field and crossed the ball in front of the goal to
Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) who put the ball home for her fifth score of the season in the 20
th minute.
Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) joined in the senior scoring with a goal of her own after collecting the ball following
Catherine Gregoire's (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) header getting blocked in front of the Valiants goal for a 3-0 lead in the 27
th minute.
Wilkes' fourth goal was the senior tandem of
Nicole Harmer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) with another assist by Towlen as the Colonels entered halftime with a 4-0 lead, the largest after the first 45 for the team all season. Wilkes was dominant in the first half, leading the shot count 15-0 (13-0 on goal) and earning seven corner kicks while Manhattanville had zero.
Tatiana Mancera (Miami, FL/Archimedean Upper Conservatory) registered her first career goal in the 72
nd minute while
Allison Peet (Sayre, PA/Sayre) finished the scoring in the 88
th minute when
Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) served a beautiful cross from the left side past the keeper for an easy tap-in, Peet's fourth goal of the season as she continues to reach new career highs with each score.
Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) started in goal for the Colonels, teaming with
Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert), who came on in the second half, to shut out the Valiants. Neither keeper saw a shot on net.
Wilkes finished the game allowing only one shot attempt that was blocked and did not reach the keeper, while the Colonels tied their season-high with 27 shot attempts, of which 13 reached the net, also tying a season-high.
Following the senior day ceremony, the team honored the memory of Susan Dalton St. Onge '91, who passed away this summer. Susan was a dedicated alumna whose generous gift to the program helped refurbish the team's locker room. Dalton St. Onge's family was welcomed to the field for the announcement that the team's senior day moving forward will be named in her memory.
Wilkes returns to the field on Tuesday when it will host SUNY Oneonta for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
