Wilkes Women's Soccer Ties SUNY Oneonta 1-1

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought tie in its final non-conference contest of the season, ending 110 minutes of play at 1-1 against SUNY Oneonta at Schmidt Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Colonels are now 8-5-2 this season.

Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) had a chance to give Wilkes the lead in the 23rd minute but her shot attempt was blocked by a defender on the goal line.

SUNY Oneonta had the ball for most of the first half, but it was Wilkes who led in stats, outshooting the Red Dragons and 4-3 on goal, while holding a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The score remained even at zero as the buzzer sounded starting halftime.

Oneonta came within inches of taking the lead when a Red Dragon forward took the ball following a scrum in front of the cage and lined a shot that had eyes for the upper right corner before keeper Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) made a diving save to knock it out-of-bounds and keep the score tied in the 49th minute.

The Colonels took the lead in the 52nd minute when Karyna Vargas (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) lobbed a pass up the middle to a sprinting Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing), who beat the defense and put a shot into the upper right half of the goal past SUNY Oneonta's keeper for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons tied the score in the 66th minute when a corner kick floated just past the grouping of players in front of the net to a streaking Oneonta player who deflected it into an open net.

Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) had a header blocked on the goal line by a Red Dragon defender to keep the score tied in the 72nd minute.

Wilkes kept the pressure on Oneonta in the first overtime period, attempting five shots, but the Colonels were unable to find the net as the extra period ended with the score remaining 1-1.

The second overtime was much of the same as Wilkes had the only shot attempt.

The Colonels led in shots for the game 23-9, but only held a 7-6 lead in shots on goal. Wilkes also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Cecere made five saves for Wilkes.

The Colonels close out the regular season on Friday when they travel to FDU-Florham for a 7:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game.
