Early Strike Holds for Wilkes Women's Soccer in 1-0 Shutout of Kean
EDWARDSVILLE –
Allison Peet (Sayre, PA/Sayre) scored in the third minute and
Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) recorded her second consecutive shutout as the Wilkes University women's soccer team defeating Kean University 1-0 Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium in non-conference action.
Wilkes improved to 4-4-1 overall with its victory over the New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent. Kean fell to 3-4-4 overall.
The Colonels came out strong and found the back of the net just 2:21 into the game when Peet beat her defender with a near-post run and one-timed in a perfect cross from
Kayla Lopez (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the second of the season for Peet while the assist was the first career point for Lopez.
Cecere made her first save of the game in the 24
th minute and made two more first-half saves in the 41
st and 42
nd minutes. Wilkes almost took a two-goal lead with 27 seconds left in the first half but
Lauren Esser's (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) effort from outside the box was stopped with a diving save.
At the half Wilkes held a 7-3 advantage in shots.
Alyssa Shaver (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) had an opportunity in the 61
st minute to add to the Colonels lead after a strong effort to gain advantage of the ball but her shot sailed wide to the right.
Cecere made a key play to keep the Cougars away from goal in the 85
th minute when she came out to the top of her box and dove on a through ball before a Kean played could get a foot to it.
Anna Seamon (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone Central),
Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity),
Niamh Harkins (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley), and
Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) helped limit the Cougars to no shots on goal in the second half and six total shots in the game as the Colonels recorded their second consecutive shutout effort. Cecere made three saves to earn her second career victory.
The Colonels close out a three-game home stand against DeSales in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom game on Homecoming with a 4:30 p.m. start time at Schmidt Stadium this Saturday.
