Egan's Late Goal Lifts Wilkes Women's Soccer Over DeSales 2-1
EDWARDSVILLE –
Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) broke open a tie game late in the second half as host Wilkes University notched its third straight win besting DeSales University 2-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
With the win Wilkes improved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-0 in MAC Freedom matches while DeSales dropped to 3-6-2 overall and 0-2 in league contests.
With the match tied at 1-1, Egan took a free kick from
Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) from 20 yards out heading home the eventual game-winner at the 77:11 mark.
Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) came up huge defensively for Wilkes making a save on a DeSales breakaway shot with just under eight minutes left in the match preserving the win.
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) put Wilkes on the board first when
Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) played a ball up the right side leading Towlen for a breakaway attempt where she put it home past the Bulldog keeper with 18 minutes remaining in the first half.
Gabby Torchia tied the match for DeSales scoring on a header off a corner kick from Annie Brush at the 51:47 mark of the second half setting up Egan's late heroics.
Stanley wasn't test much but made the big save when needed to seal the conference home win. Haley Jacobs finished with two saves in net for DeSales. DeSales held a 6-4 shot advantage while garnering six corner attempts to Wilkes' four.
Wilkes returns to the pitch Wednesday traveling to cross-town rival King's College for a MAC Freedom match starting at 7:00 p.m.
