Dunn Scores Twice in Wilkes Field Hockey's 5-3 Loss to Arcadia
EDWARDSVILLE –
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) scored twice but the Wilkes University field hockey team fell by a 5-3 final at Schmidt Stadium to Arcadia University Monday night in non-conference action.
Wilkes dropped to 6-7 overall with the defeat while Arcadia moved to 10-2. The Colonels were able to score three goals against the Knights who entered tonight's game only allowing six goals in 11 games.
The Knights earned two early penalty corners and made the second opportunity pay off with the game's first goal when Gabby Sedares fired the insert pass into the cage at the 1:56 mark. Aracdia added to its lead less than four-minutes later with an odd-man chance.
The Wilkes offense responded with pressure earning four consecutive penalty corners and after having shots blocked on the first three attempts
Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) was able to deflect home a
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) shot to make the score 2-1 in the 10
th minute. The goal was the second of the season for Stepanski while Gayoski tallied her fifth assist.
The Colonels nearly tied the game in the 13
th minute but Ashton Evans came out of her cage to make a save on
Mackenzie Sweeney (Millville, PA/Millville). Arcadia then extended the lead to 3-1 in the 21
st minute when Sedares scored her second of the game off a penalty corner play.
Wilkes kept the score at a two-goal deficit in the 24
th minute when Stepanski blocked Sedares' first attempt and then
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made a pad save on the second shot. At the other end the Colonels found their second goal when
Cheyenne Mazzocca's (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) shot deflected off a defender over to Dunn for the open-goal at the 25:38 mark. Mazzocca was credited with her first career assist.
Kendra then came up big with three saves within 28 seconds in the 31
st minute but as time expired at the end of the first half the Knights connected on another penalty corner to go into half up 4-2.
Just over four minutes into the second half the Knights grabbed their first three-goal lead of the game when Lindsay Bechtold scored her second of the contest.
Lauren Baldwin's (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) shot nearly beat the Arcadia goalkeeper through the legs in the 45
th minute but Evans was able to make the stop to preserve the three-goal lead. The Colonels would get one back in the 60
th minute when
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) drove up the right side and played a pass to the front of the goal where Dunn one-timed it into the cage for her second of the game and third goal of the season. It was the second assist of the year for Kelley.
Wilkes had opportunities in the 65
th and 66
th minutes when Kelley deflected a shot just wide and Dunn also missed wide to the left on a chance. Dunn again almost scored her third goal with just over two minutes remaining when her shot into the circle deflected off a defender but Allison Nikolaus made a nice reaction save.
Arcadia held advantages of 18-13 in shots, 12-6 in shots on goal and 12-8 in penalty corners. Kendra made seven saves for the Colonels.
The Colonels return to Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action when they travel to Delaware Valley Friday night for a 7:00 p.m. game.
