Towlen's Goal Sends Wilkes Women's Soccer into ECAC Semifinals with 1-0 Victory Over Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, MA –
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) scored the game-winning goal early in the first half to send the Wilkes women's soccer team into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) semifinals with a 1-0 victory over host Springfield College Sunday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
Wilkes improved to 11-7-2 overall following its second round win in the postseason tournament. Springfield saw its season end at 15-6-1 overall. The Colonels advance to the semifinal round next Saturday at a site to be determined. The finals are set for next Sunday.
Towlen broke free from the defense and found the back of the net at the 20:03 mark of the first half which proved to be the game-winner. The Colonel defense was stout throughout holding a high-powered Springfield offense, who scored four goals in its first round win, scoreless over the 90 minute contest.
Springfield held a slight 11-10 shot advantage while each team garnered two corner kicks each.
Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) finished with four saves in net recording her fourth shutout on the year.
Wilkes will await word on their opponent and site of competition in the ECAC semifinals.
