Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Earns First Lead before Falling to SUNY Canton

WILKES-BARRE – When Cally Erickson (Carbondale, CO/) opened the scoring 1:45 into the second period the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team earned its first lead in program history, but SUNY Canton was able to rebound and leave the Toyota SportsPlex with a 6-2 victory over the Colonels Saturday afternoon.

Shauna Tubbs (Maumee, OH/) added the Colonels second goal late in the second period to send the game into the second intermission with the Kangaroos leading 3-2.

With the loss Wilkes dropped to 0-8-0 overall while SUNY Canton improved to 4-3-2.

Alexa Rango (Hopewell Junction, NY/) was stellar in the first period for the Colonels as she made 19 saves. Her counterpart Brooke Susac made six saves on the other end as the game remained scoreless through the first period.

Erickson's first career goal broke the tie when she collected the puck after Kendall Castro (Killingworth, CT/) possessed the puck into the Canton zone. Erickson was able to work to the front of the net and get off a backhand shot that found its way into the top of the goal over the shoulder of Susac. Castro picked up her second assist of the season on the play.

The Wilkes lead stood until the 7:41 mark of the second period when Hannah Brady was able to beat Rango for the first time on the day. The Roos would gain the lead on the power play on a Jessica Pele goal at the 15:20 mark of the second and then added another goal from Noelle Niemiec just 59 seconds later to go ahead 3-1.

Tubbs answered with her second career goal at the 18:04 mark when she collected a loose puck and beat Susac with a wrist shot to send Wilkes into the locker room trailing 3-2 after two periods.

A goal by Sarah Kosnaskie 38 seconds into the third period put the Roos back up by two goals and Canton added two more insurance goals at the 4:33 mark on the power play and at the 9:09 mark to take the game by a 6-2 final.

Rango played the majority of the game between the pipes for the Colonels coming away with a career-high 44 saves. Ally Joly (Lincoln, RI/) made three saves during the second period in just over one minute of action before being injured during a net-front scramble. Ashley Murry (Morgantown, PA/) had a strong game in the faceoff circle as she collected 23 faceoff wins.

Susac picked up the win for Canton with 16 saves. Pele finished with a game-high three points on one goal and two assists while Niemiec led the Kangaroos with a plus-3 rating.

Wilkes returns to the ice on Friday, December 7 for a 4:00 p.m. puck drop at Morrisville State College.
