Late Short-Handed Goal Completes Comeback Win for Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey

WILKES-BARRE – Devon Schell's (Scarsdale, NY/) short-handed goal with 2:05 left in the third period capped off the Wilkes men's ice hockey 3-2 come from behind victory over Nazareth College at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday night.

The win improves Wilkes to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) while dropping Nazareth, who's receiving votes in the national top 15 polls, to 7-2-4 (5-2-2 UCHC).

The Golden Flyers took a 2-0 lead in this one after a power play goal in the first period and another tally just over two minutes into the second.

The Colonels would respond at the 7:45 mark when Jivan Sidhu (Burnaby, BC/) scored his third goal of the season, from Austin Tonkovich (Canonsburg, PA/) and Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/), to cut the deficit in half.

With less than five minutes remaining in the period Wilkes would capitalize on the power play when Sidhu set up Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ), for his sixth tally of the year, to knot the game up at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

It was a physical contest throughout with several penalties being committed by both teams. The Colonels found themselves on the penalty kill with less than three minutes remaining in regulation when Schell drove down the far side toward the Golden Flyers goaltender, staved off a defender and backhanded one into the top shelf of the net to give Wilkes their first lead of the game with 2:05 remaining, on their way to a 3-2 victory.

Colonels goaltender Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) made 26 saves to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Wilkes continues its homestand on Wednesday, December 19th when it welcomes Bryn Athyn to the Toyota Sportsplex for a 7:15 p.m. non-conference contest.
