Boccio, Burkhardt and Held All Enjoy Big Days in 17-12 Loss at Mount Saint Mary
NEWBURGH, N.Y. –
Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley),
Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) and
Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) combined for 11 of Wilkes University's 12 goals but the Lady Colonels fell 17-12 to host Mount Saint Mary College Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
Wilkes dropped to 1-5 overall following its fourth straight defeat of the season. Mount Saint Mary evened its overall record to 2-2 on the year.
Wilkes took its only lead of the game four minutes into the first half when Held and Boccio went back-to-back with goals to give the Lady Colonels a 2-1 lead with 26:46 left in the half. Held added her second of the game four minutes later before a three-goal stretch lifted Mount Saint Mary to a 5-3 advantage with 15:59 remaining in the half.
Burkhardt notched her first of the game and Boccio tied things up at 5-5 two minutes later when she scored her second strike of the contest. Four straight Mount Saint Mary goals pushed the hosts back up by four before
Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) notched the other Wilkes' tally in the game at the 7:11 mark of the first half. Mount Saint Mary finished the half with three unanswered goals to take a 12-6 lead at the break.
Wilkes outscored Mount Saint Mary 6-5 over the final 30 minutes, but couldn't come any closer than six points throughout the half. Burkhardt scored four of her career-high five goals in the second half for the Lady Colonels.
Boccio led all Wilkes attackers with seven points on three goals and four assists. Burkhardt followed with six points on five goals and one helper while Held chipped in five points on three goals and two assists.
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) started and finished with four saves in net before being substituted for by
Melania Velasquez (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) who also made four stops in 21:33.
Wilkes returns home Tuesday hosting Cazenovia College at 5:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
