Held, Burkhardt Combined for Nine Goals in Wilkes Women's Lacrosse 15-11 Loss at Mount Saint Vincent

BRONX, N.Y. – Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) combined for nine goals but host Mount Saint Vincent broke up a tie game late in the second half to post a 15-11 victory over visiting Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park.

Wilkes dropped to 2-6 overall following the road non-conference defeat while Mount Saint Vincent picked up its first win of the year improving to 1-2.

The teams traded goals early as Held and Burkhardt went back-to-back to tie the game at 2-2 with 25:43 left in the first half. After a Dolphin goal broke the tie, Kirsten Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Kenwood) found the back of the cage to tie things up again at 3. Two strikes from Mount Saint Vincent's Meg Merrell gave the hosts a 5-3 lead with 19:52 remaining in the half before Held found Burkhardt for her second goal of the contest cutting into the advantage trailing 5-4.

Held scored one more time to end the first half as Wilkes trailed 8-5 at the break.

Burkhardt completed her hat trick two minutes into the second frame and Held added her third tally of the game to keep Wilkes within striking distance down 9-7. After a Mount Saint Vincent goal, Held scored twice, including the 200th point of her career, and Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) finished off the rally tying the game at 10 with 14:08 left to play.

From there Mount Saint Vincent scored five of the game's next six goals to hold on for the 15-11 victory. Burkhardt added her fourth goal of the game with 6:29 remaining as Wilkes trailed 13-11, but two more Mount Saint Vincent goals pushed the advantage back to four, a lead they would not relinquish.

Held led all Wilkes attackers with seven points on five goals and two assists. She became the fifth Lady Colonel to reach the 200-point  plateau joining Carley Smith '15, Madeleine Brownsey '16, Gabby Ford '14 and Tor Kerr '16. Burkhardt followed with four points on four goals. Duman and Jackson each added one goal.

Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) finished with 10 saves in 57:32 minutes of action. Melania Velasquez (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) entered in relief playing the final 2:28.

Wilkes continues its road stretch Tuesday traveling to Lancaster, pa. for a game against Lancaster Bible starting at 4:00 p.m.
