Offense Continues to Flow as Wilkes Baseball Defeats Eastern Mennonite

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – For the third time in as many games, the Wilkes University baseball team exploded for 10 runs as its offensive onslaught continued in Tuesday's 10-6 victory over Eastern Mennonite University at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

The Colonels improved to 3-0 with the win.

Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) continued his sizzling start at the plate in the bottom of the first, getting Wilkes on the board with a two-run single that brought home Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) and Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy). Champi reached base with a single and advanced to second on a single from Capozzi before Reinert's run scoring knock.

The Royals crossed the plate in top of the third, scoring one run on three hits but Colonels' starter Matthew Konikow (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) was able to minimize the damage, leaving two runners on base.

Wilkes answered in the bottom of the inning when Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) brought home Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) with a sacrifice fly to right, completing a small-ball trip around the bases in which Patrizio singled to the pitcher, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout, giving the Colonels a 3-1 lead.

Wilkes added on in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on three hits and an Eastern Mennonite error. Reinert led off with a double to center before Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) reached on an infield single that advanced Reinert to second. After a strikeout, Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) reached on an error that moved Eicher to second and brought home Reinert before Patrizio singled to bring home Eicher.

The Royals added a second run in the top of the fifth on no hits, and cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the sixth with another run on one hit.

In the bottom of the sixth Patrizio again singled with runners in scoring position as his infield single brought home Jonah Harder (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) with Wilkes' sixth run of the game.

After Eastern Mennonite plated its fourth run of the game in the top of the seventh, the Colonels exploded for four runs in the bottom of the frame on two hits. Wilkes was aided by three bases-loaded walks and an RBI single from Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), letting patience be the name of the game and making the Royals earn each out in the field.

The Royals finished the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Konikow earned his first collegiate victory, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. Colin Smith (Purdys, NY/Somers), Jeremy Yzeik (Waymart, PA/Holy Cross), and Nolan Ott (Montoursville, PA/Montoursville Area) completed the final four innings to seal the victory.

Champi and Patrizio led the way at the plate, each finishing 3-for-4. Patrizio also had two RBI's and one run scored while Champi scored two runs. Reinert continued to be a problem for opposing pitchers, going 2-for-3 with three RBI's, two runs scored, and one walk. Wing, Fischer, Capozzi, and Eicher each contributed one hit apiece.

The Colonels are back in action on Wednesday when they face Penn State-Harrisburg for a noon non-conference game.
