Defensive Miscues Sink Wilkes Baseball against New England College
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wilkes University baseball team committed a combined six errors that lead to seven unearned runs crossing the plate as New England College took both ends of the doubleheader on Friday, dropping game one 5-2 before falling in game two 9-1.
The Colonels fell to 3-4 on the season.
In game one, New England jumped out to a 5-0 lead with runs in the first and third and three in the fifth.
Wilkes attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) drove home
Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge) and
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) with a double after both walked, but that was as close as the Colonels got.
Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) suffered the hard-luck defeat in game one despite an excellent outing, throwing the first five innings while surrendering five runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Wing, Fischer,
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston), and
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) each finished game one with one hit.
Game two was another story, as the Pilgrims tallied multiple runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth.
The Colonels crossed the plate in the top of the sixth when
Anthony Favor (Woodbridge, NJ/St. Joseph-Metuchen) singled to left to bring home
Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley).
Francis Navatta (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) pitched the first three innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Jeremy Yzeik (Waymart, PA/Holy Cross) and
Jason Tisa (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) threw the final three innings.
Alex Palmer (Shrewsbury, PA/Susquehannock) led at the plate in game two, finishing 2-for-3. Champi, Walther, and Favor totaled one hit apiece.
Wilkes completes its southern excursion on Saturday morning with a single non-conference game against the Catholic University of America 10:00 a.m.
