Wilkes Softball Erases Four-Run Deficit to Beat Mount Aloysius

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wilkes University softball team's bats came alive in the fourth inning of Thursday's second game at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic to erase a 4-0 deficit to defeat Mount Aloysius College 6-4.

With the victory Wilkes improved to 5-3 overall on the season and split its two games Thursday in Myrtle Beach.

Mount Aloysius (7-5) scored four runs over the first three innings but the damage could have been worse as the Mounties left the bases loaded in the top of the third. With one run across in the inning and only one out Courtney Lin grounded to Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) at third who threw home for the force out. Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) then got the next batter to fly out to Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) in right field to end the threat.

The Lady Colonels would strike for their first runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Megan Magoon (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) started a two-out rally with a walk. Alexis Kessler (Bangor, PA/Bangor) then singled and Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) followed with a pinch-hit RBI knock to bring in Magoon. Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) then singled to bring home Kessler and Kondras continued the hit parade with another RBI base hit to score Gibson and cut the Mounties lead to 4-3.

In the top of the fifth inning Staunton retired the side with three strikeouts to keep the momentum with Wilkes.

Magoon tied the score with a two-out run-scoring double in the bottom of the fifth to bring in Nicolette Kessler (Bangor, PA/Bangor) who reached with a pinch-hit single.

Wilkes then struck for two more runs in the sixth inning to complete the comeback. Sydney Cogswell (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) singled to start the frame and moved to second on Jumalon's sacrifice bunt. She then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on what would prove to be the game-winning hit off the bat of Kondras. Staunton followed with a single and Kaliyah Moore (South Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) walked to load the bases. Podlesney then singled to score Kondras to provide the Lady Colonels with an insurance run.

Staunton (2-1) then finished off the complete-game victory with two strikeouts in the top of the seventh inning. She allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out five but did not allow a hit over the final four innings.

Kondras finished the game 2-4 with two RBI's to lead the Wilkes offense that closed the game with 10 hits over its final three at-bats.

The Lady Colonels conclude their Spring Break Trip with games against Gwynedd Mercy University and La Roche College on Friday.
