Wilkes Softball Explodes for 27 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Keystone 

LA PLUME, PA - Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) went 4-for-4 with two RBI's and four runs scored as the Wilkes University Softball team won game one 16-4 and added an RBI in an 11-3 game two victory over Keystone College Wednesday at Edmunds Field. The Lady Colonels took both games of the non-conference doubleheader after five innings.

Wilkes improved to 16-8 overall this season while Keystone fell to 5-17.

Jumalon started her career day with a double down the left field line in the top of the first inning and came into score on Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth)'s RBI single to center field. Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) then drove in Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley), who reached on a hit-by-pitch, with another base knock to center to put the Lady Colonels ahead 2-0.

Keystone cut into the lead with one run on two hits and one error in the bottom of the second. Wilkes got the run back in the top of the third after Jumalon led off the inning with a triple. She then scored on Brown's RBI ground out to third.

The Giants took a 4-3 lead with three runs on two hits and three walks in the bottom of the third inning.

The Wilkes offense answered back in a big way in the top of the fourth inning with eight runs on eight hits and three Keystone errors to take an 11-4 lead. Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) led off the inning with a single and then Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) reached on a bunt single. Sydney Cogswell (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) then singled through the left side to plate Podlesney for the inning's first run. Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) then scored Birchmeier with a base hit through the right side. Jumalon followed with a single to left to plate pinch runner Alexis Kessler (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and Kondras scored when Gibson reached on an error. Welker then singled through the left side to bring Jumalon across the plate and Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) finished off the scoring with a three-run home run to center field to bring in Brown and Gibson.

The bats stayed alive for Wilkes in the fifth inning when five more runs were scored on four extra base hits and five total hits. Kondras tripled to start the inning and Jumalon then singled for her fourth hit in as many at bats to pick up her second RBI of the game. Gibson then doubled to move Jumalon ahead to third and then she scored her fourth run of the game on Welker's sacrifice fly. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Brown and Gambino pushed two more runs in and the Lady Colonels final run came when Birchmeier reach on an error and Gambino scored.

Erika Gerace (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) entered to pitch a scoreless bottom of the fifth as Wilkes took game one after five frames due to the run rule.

In addition to Jumalon, five more players finished game one with multiple hits. Welker was 3-for-3 with three RBI's, Gambino was 3-for-4 with four RBI's, Brown was 2-for-4 with three RBI's, Kondras was 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Birchmeier was 2-for-4. Gibson was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and Podlesney and Cogswell added one hit each.

Gambino went the first 2.0 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. She faced five batters in the third before Podlesney (5-6) entered in relief to earn the victory. She went 2.0 innings striking out four while allowing only one hit.

In game two Wilkes struck for seven runs in the second inning to jump out to a commanding lead. Podlesney singled through the right side to score Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) who had led off the inning with a single of her own. Haley Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) then reached on an error which allowed Brown, who had singled earlier, to score. Megan Magoon (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) the singled to load the bases. An error by the shortstop off the bat of Gibson brought in Boyd and then Welker singled to score Magoon. Jumalon scored when Staunton reached on an error and then Welker scored on another Giants error.

Wilkes added an eighth run in the top of the third when Jumalon hit an RBI single to center field to bring in Podlesney who led off with her own single to center.

Keystone scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-2.

Mia Lussier (Somerset, MA/Somerset Berkley) reach on an error to start the fourth inning and moved to second on a Staunton ground out. Lussier then scored from second when Brown singled to left center as Wilkes went up 9-2.

Staunton then knocked a two-run single that scored Gibson and Magoon in the top of the fifth to make the score 11-2.

Keystone added one run on three hits in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough to extend the game as Wilkes took game two by the run rule again.

Staunton led three players with two hits in game two going 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Brown was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Podlesney was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Magoon, Jumalon, Welker, and Lussier all added one hit.

Gambino again started and went 2.2 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits. Podlesney (6-6) was awarded the win again as she went 1.1 innings allowing one hit. Gerace closed things out with one inning allowing one earned run on three hits.

The Lady Colonels return to the field tomorrow (Thursday) when they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to face Lycoming College with game one of a non-conference doubleheader set to start at 3:00 p.m.
