Held's Six Goals Not Enough in Wilkes Women's Lacrosse 23-10 Defeat at Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored six goals but host Manhattanville College raced out to a 13-6 lead at the half and never looked back on way to a 23-10 MAC Freedom victory over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon at Govaliants.com Field.

Wilkes dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in MAC Freedom play following the loss while Manhattanville improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league contests.

Manhattanville jumped out to a 3-0 lead four minutes into the game before Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) put Wilkes on the board with an unassisted goal at the 23:33 mark. After two more Valiant goals, Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored unassisted followed by back-to-back goals from Held including one on the man-down situation that cut the Manhattanville advantage to 5-4.

From there the Valiants used a 7-0 spurt to open up a 12-4 lead before two more goals from Held kept the Lady Colonels in the contest trailing by seven at the half.

Boccio notched her second strike of the game early in the second half before another big spurt from Manhattanville, this time five unanswered goals, pushed the lead to 19-7 with 15:00 minutes left in the contest.

Lauara Singleton scored for Wilkes with just over 13 minutes remaining and Held closed out the scoring with two more of her team-high six goals to end the Wilkes offensive output.

Manhattanville held a 41-25 shot advantage while Wilkes controlled a slight advantage in draw controls at 17-16.

Wilkes used three different goalies in the game with Melania Velasquez (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) suffering the loss finishing with six saves in 42:21 in net.

Wilkes continues MAC Freedom play Wednesday hosting local rival Misericordia University at 4:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
