Wilkes Softball Drops MAC Freedom Doubleheader at Manhattanville
PURCHASE, NY –
Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) collected three hits on the day including a double but the Wilkes University softball team was swept at Manhattanville College in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Valiants took game one 7-2 and game two 8-0 in five innings.
Wilkes dropped to 17-11 overall and to 4-6 in the MAC Freedom after today's action. Manhattanville improved to 13-11 overall and to 5-3 in the conference.
The Lady Colonels started off game one with two quick runs in the top of the first inning.
Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) walked with two outs and then
Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) followed with a two-run home run to left center to provide Wilkes with the 2-0 lead.
Manhattanville scored one unearned run in the second inning and then took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs on four hits. The Valiants then added four runs on four hits including a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 7-2.
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) went 2-for-3 at the plate and Kondras, Staunton,
Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge), and
Sydney Cogswell (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) each added one hit in the first game.
Staunton (7-2) took the loss in the circle going six innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits. She struck out four in the game.
The Valiants scored one run in the first inning of game two on a double and then knocked two three-run home runs for a six-run second inning. A solo home run in the fourth put Manhattanville ahead 8-0 and the hosts were able to keep Wilkes off the board in the top of the fifth to take the game.
Kondras went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot. Staunton, Gambino, and
Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) added one hit each.
Podlesney (6-7) went four innings giving up eight runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.
Wilkes caps off five consecutive road dates on Tuesday in Selinsgrove, Pa. with a non-conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University. Game one starts at 3:00 p.m.
