Wilkes Baseball Drops Two Games at DeSales
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – In the continuation of yesterday's game and the regularly scheduled series finale, the Wilkes University baseball team came away empty handed, dropping the second game of yesterday's doubleheader 3-0 while falling 18-1 in the nine inning contest against DeSales University to complete the two teams' Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonels, who now sit at 12-8 in conference and 17-15 overall, suffered their first series sweep of the season.
DeSales opened the scoring in the top of the second with a solo home run that was hit yesterday at Artillery Park before lightning strikes halted the game.
After the continuation, the Bulldogs pushed across runs in the fourth and the seventh.
Wilkes earned its best chance of the game in the bottom of the third when
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led off with a single to right. After a strikeout,
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) followed with a walk to put runners on first and second but was erased on a fielder's choice that moved Wing to third and put
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) on first.
Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) loaded the bases on a walk, but a fly out ended the inning.
Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton) fell to 1-3 on the season, pitching the first two innings yesterday afternoon and surrendering one run on two hits with zero walks and three strikeouts.
Jeremy Yzeik (Waymart, PA/Holy Cross) entered today and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while
Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two walks.
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led the Colonels at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.
Game two was a completely different narrative as the Bulldogs crossed the plate 18 times before Wilkes notched a single run.
Jared Angerman (Northampton, PA/Northampton Area) notched both his first career hit and first career RBI in the top of the eighth, bringing home
Jason Tisa (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit), who reached on his first career hit.
Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), Angerman, Clymer,
Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne), and Tisa all finished with one hit.
The Colonels close out the regular season on Tuesday when they head to Delaware Valley for the series finale nine inning game starting at 3:30 p.m. Wilkes is also now locked in as the three seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom tournament, and will face second-seeded Misericordia in its first game on Friday.
