Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Falls to FDU-Florham in MAC Freedom Opener
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team dropped its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener 13-1 to visiting FDU-Florham at Schmidt Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored her 33
rd goal of the season for the Lady Colonels.
Wilkes dropped to 3-7 overall and to 0-1 in the MAC Freedom while FDU-Florham improved to 6-4 overall and to 1-0 in the conference.
The Devils wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard with two goals within the first 42 seconds. In total FDU-Florham scored 10 first-half goals including three on the man-up situation.
FDU-Florham scored the first three tallies of the second half before Held struck to put the Lady Colonels on the board with 13:05 left when the senior fired a free-position shot past the Devils goalkeeper.
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) made five saves during her 35:50 minutes of action in net for the Lady Colonels and led the team with three ground balls.
Melania Velasquez (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) made three saves in the final 24:10 of action.
Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) led Wilkes with four shots. Held followed with three and
Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) had one shot.
Danielle McCole (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) led the Lady Colonels with three caused turnovers and McCole, Duman,
Kylie Bedwell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro), and
Kirsten Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Kenwood) all collected two ground balls.
Samantha Holleritter and Caitlyn Damon each scored three goals for FDU-Florham and Cassidy Vastano led the Devils with six points on one goal and five assists.
The Lady Colonels continue MAC Freedom play with a road contest at crosstown rival King's College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
