Two Walk-Off Hits, Unearned Runs Doom Wilkes Softball at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Despite entering the seventh inning with multiple-run leads in each game, the Wilkes University softball team was unable to seal the game in both ends of its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader at Delaware Valley University, allowing a combined 10 unearned runs to cross the plate on Sunday afternoon, dropping game one 7-6 and game two 6-5.

The Lady Colonels are now 4-4 in conference and 14-8 overall.

Wilkes wasted no time getting on the board in game one as Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) led off with a double and came home to score on a single from Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance). Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) stepped up next and hit a double of her own to the right-center gap to bring in Jumalon as the Lady Colonels ended the frame with a 2-0 advantage.

Wilkes added a third run in the top of the second on a triple from Jumalon that scored Nicolette Kessler (Bangor, PA/Bangor), who led off the inning with a walk.

Delaware Valley got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with one run on one hit and one error.

Sydney Cogswell (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) helped push the lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth when she singled to bring Caitlin Brown (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) before Jumalon grounded out to bring home Kessler.

The Aggies began to chip away in the bottom of the sixth with one run before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take game one.

Gambino suffered the defeat in the circle, going 6.1 innings while giving up seven runs (one earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Jumalon (2-5, one run, three RBI's) and Gibson (2-4, one RBI) led the way at the plate in the first contest.

Wilkes again scored first in game two when Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) came in to score on a fielding error in the top of the second.

Delaware Valley responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Colonels matched the Aggies in the top of the fifth with three runs. Jumalon hit a one-out double and came in to score on an error. After a fielder's choice, Gambino hit an RBI double of her own to bring home Brown and was followed by a double from Welker that plated Gambino, giving Wilkes a 4-3 advantage.

Welker pushed the lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh with a run-scoring single up the middle bringing home Brown.

Delaware Valley had one last inning of heroics in it, however, scoring three unearned runs in the final frame to take game two.

Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) went the distance in the nightcap, going 6.2 innings while allowing six runs (two earned) on eight hits with a season-high six strikeouts.

Welker finished 4-4 with one run scored and one RBI while Podlesney went 2-4.

The Lady Colonels return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Keystone College for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
