Wilkes Men's Soccer Scores Four Goals in Shutout Win
EDWARDSVILLE – The Colonels dominated the Defenders en route to a 4-0 victory at Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday evening. Wilkes used scoring spurts in each half to set their highest offensive output so far this season.
Wilkes improved to 2-1-1 on the season while handing Clarks Summit (3-1-0) their first defeat of 2018.
The Colonels scored fairly early into this one as Kyle Bentz's thru ball found Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) all alone on the left side of the box to blast it by the goalkeeper for his first marker of the season and give Wilkes a 1-0 lead just over ten minutes into the match.
Less than three minutes later, Bentz's cross into the center of the box again found Huff, who after putting his first attempt off the crossbar, buried the rebound to score his second goal of the game and give the Colonels a 2-0 lead at the 13:43 mark.
Clarks Summit came out of the half looking to get back into the game with the next tally. Play was tighter at the beginning of the second half until Gabriel Nieves (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland Senior) found Kyle Bentz, who scored his second goal of the season to stretch the Wilkes lead to 3-0 at the 64:11 mark.
The Colonels would score quickly for the second time this match when Michael Buckholtz played a ball ahead to Nieves who then beat the keeper on the short side to put this game away at the 65:41 mark.
Wilkes offense broke out in this one as they registered 24 shots and held a 10-2 shots on goal advantage over Clarks Summit.
Huff set the tone early while recording his first two goals of the season. Bentz and Nieves each had a goal and assist for three-point nights in the victory.
The Colonels return to action Saturday, September 15th when they hit the road for a 1:00 p.m. match against Keystone College.
