Wilkes Men's Soccer Loses to Keystone in Overtime 2-1

LA PLUME, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team dropped a road match to Keystone on Saturday afternoon 2-1 in overtime. Wilkes scored a goal late in the second half to force overtime but Keystone found the game-winning goal just four minutes into the extra period.

The loss drops Wilkes to 2-2-1. With the win, Keystone pushes their winning streak to three.

The match was tied at halftime after an evenly played first half. Keystone did hold a slight advantage in shots (7-6) and corner kicks (3-2) but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes.

The Giants scored early into the second half when Daniel Zuniga scored directly off a throw in from Jordan Vance in the 53rd minute for his fourth goal of the season and the first of the contest.

The Colonels played stingy defense as they continued to ward off attacks from the Giants, who outshot the Wilkes 12-6 in the second half.

Wilkes eventually capitalized on their scoring chances when Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) found the right time to score his first goal of the season, in the 76th minute to tie the game up at 1-1.

After a scoreless end to the second half, Keystone wasted little time finding the game-winner as Kouassi Kouadio crossed a ball into the box that Michael Nyarko put in the back of the net to give the Giants the victory and end the Colonels comeback chances.

Goaltender Stephen Johnson (Bear Creek Twp, PA/Coughlin) made a career-high six saves to allow the Colonels a chance to force overtime.

Wilkes returns to the pitch on Wednesday September 19th when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna at 7:00 p.m.
