Myers Earns 100th Colonel Win in Wilkes Field Hockey's 3-1 Victory

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team scored three unanswered goals to defeat Cedar Crest College 3-1 on Thursday evening at Schmidt Stadium. With the win, Sara Myers notched her 100th win as the Colonels head coach in just her tenth season on the sidelines for the navy and gold.

Wilkes improved to 3-2 with the victory. Cedar Crest is still in search of their first win of 2018, as they fall to 0-4.

Wilkes fell behind early in this one as Cedar Crest took a 1-0 lead just 7:42 into the match when Deserea Dayton put one in the back of the cage to give the Falcons some early momentum.

The Colonels did not flinch, as they kept pressure on the Falcons defense and were rewarded for their resilience when Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored her second goal of the season on a pass from Kayla Gronkowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) to tie the game up 1-1 at the 26:37 mark.

Wilkes would head into the half with a lead after Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) found Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) for her second goal of the season with just under two minutes remaining until halftime.

The team continued their offensive barrage in the second half and put another goal on the board when Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) found the back of the cage for her first time this year at the 48:47 mark.

The Colonels controlled the action all game long as the held healthy advantages in shots (29-1), shots on goal (16-1) and penalty corners (14-3) over the Falcons.

Wilkes returns to action on Saturday, September 15th when it heads to Reading, PA to face off against Alvernia University at 7:00 p.m.
