Betancourt's Late Goal Pushes Wilkes Men's Soccer by Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, PA – Freshman Luke Betancourt (Easton, PA/Easton Area) recorded his first career goal in the 79th minute of Wednesday night's Wilkes University men's soccer game at Susquehanna University to hand the Colonels a 1-0 victory and their third win of the season.

Wilkes earned a corner kick in the 78th minute and shortly after kept the pressure on the Susquehanna defense as sophomore Shane Henehan (Bensalem, PA/Mast Community Charter School) provided the pass to Betancourt to put the Colonels ahead at the 78:25 mark. Henehan earned his second assist of the season on the play.

The Colonels clamped down on defense over the final 11 minutes, not allowing a shot attempt by the River Hawks to end with the team's third shutout of the season.

With the victory Wilkes improved to 3-2-1 overall while Susquehanna dropped to 1-5-1.

The Colonels came out strong as Andrew Reichard (Easton, PA/Easton Area) and Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) recorded shots in the first four minutes. The defense then withstood five consecutive corner kicks by the River Hawks during the seventh through 13th minute. Senior Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) then made his first save in the 17th minute. Gallagher made another save in the 44th minute as the two sides went into the halftime break scoreless with Wilkes holding a 4-3 advantage in shots.

Wilkes started to make its offensive push in the 74th minute as back-to-back shots by Betancourt were saved. The freshman made good on his third shot attempt of the game to provide the game-winner less than five minutes later.

Gallagher earned his second shutout of the season and the 12th of his career in goal for the Navy and Gold.

The Colonels continue non-conference play when they travel to Stevenson University on Saturday to face the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m.
