Wilkes Women's Soccer Falls on Road to Bard 3-1

ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped a road match to Bard College by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Raptors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on their way to a comfortable 3-1 victory over the Colonels.

With the loss, Wilkes drops back to .500 at 2-2. On the other side, Bard improves to a game over the .500 mark at 3-2-1.

The Colonels caught a bad break early in this one as a shot by the Raptors was deflected off a Wilkes defender and into the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.

Wilkes remained unfazed, as they outshot Bard (6-3) in the first half in search of the equalizer. Unfortunately, the Raptors were able to fend off the Colonels attack and head into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Bard would push that lead to two in the 57th minute when Val Thomson's thru ball to Dylan McDonald ended up beating Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) in the top of frame for her third goal of the season.

To their credit, the Colonels would answer quickly when Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) high shot of her own beat the Bard goalkeeper in the 58th minute for her first goal of the season.

The Raptors would break the Colonels backs when just over five minutes later, in the 63rd minute, Mikala Martiros took a thru ball from Val Thomson and put it top shelf past the goalkeeper to stretch the lead back to two at 3-1.

Wilkes would battle hard to the end as this one would get a little chippy in the waning moments. A pair of yellow cards were given out to players on both teams in the last 10 minutes as the Colonels tried frantically to get within one goal. Ultimately, Bard was able to survive the Colonels barrages and earn themselves a 3-1 victory.

The Colonels did not go away quietly in this one as they held an advantage in shots (19-14), shots on goal (8-7) and corner kicks (6-2) over the Raptors.

Wilkes will try to get back to their winning ways when they return to Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday September 19th to square off against Susquehanna at 7:00 p.m.
