Susquehanna Outlasts Wilkes Women's Soccer 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference home match to Susquehanna University 1-0 on Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium. The River Hawks used a second half penalty kick goal to head home with the victory.

With the loss, Wilkes falls to 2-3. Susquehanna improves to 5-1-1 and pushes their win streak to four.

Susquehanna controlled the ball for most of the first half and held a 6-4 advantage in shots over Wilkes at the break. The Colonels were able to ward off those attacks and muster some chances of their own.

The Colonels began the second half with a different energy and controlled possession early on in the half. Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) forced a corner kick in the 52nd minute, which Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) took and culminated in a Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) scoring chance.

Wilkes almost took the lead early in the 65th minute when a header by Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) looked as though it was destined for the back of the net before Susquehanna defender Samantha Chillis kicked it out of harm's way. Susquehanna flew right down the field and put a shot off the crossbar that sent everybody in the box converging on the rebound. That is when the Colonels were called for a foul in the box that led to an Emily Sullivan penalty kick goal in the 65th minute to give the River Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Wilkes answered back when Egan had an opportunity in the box in the 77th minute but was knocked down by the Susquehanna keeper with no call being made. The Colonels sideline was furious and after a warning was eventually given a yellow card in the 80th minute.

The Colonels fed off the energy of their coach and produced more chances in the last 10 minutes, first on a Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) corner and then on a Wirth shot from the left edge of the box, that was handled by the River Hawks goalkeeper. Unfortunately, Wilkes was unable to find the equalizer and fell to Susquehanna 1-0.

Wilkes finished the game holding an advantage in several key categories including shots (11-9), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (3-0). In the end, Susquehanna was able to capitalize on their chances and leave town with the win.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday September 22 when they head to #14 Arcadia for a 3:00 p.m. match.
