No Give Up for Wilkes Women's Soccer in 2-2 Draw at No. 14 Arcadia

GLENSIDE, PA – The Wilkes University women's soccer team scored two late second half goals to force overtime and eventually ended up tying No. 14 Arcadia University 2-2 Saturday in a non-conference road game.

Megan Lercara (Plains, PA/James M. Coughlin) scored her first career goal to make the score 2-1 in the 77th minute with a penalty kick strike. Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) then tied the game in the 87th minute with her second goal of the season. Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) also had her hand in the tie as she recorded a career-high 15 saves in goal for the Colonels.

Wilkes moved to 2-3-1 overall this season while nationally ranked Arcadia now stands at 5-1-2.

After the Knights scored two goals by the 8:03 mark of the first half the Colonels needed to dig deep if they wanted to mount a comeback. Cecere started that by keeping Wilkes within striking distance with eight first-half saves.

Wilkes turned things around offensively in the second half as the Colonels were able to outshoot the Knights 9-5 over the second 45 minutes. Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) and Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) had shots that were saved early in the second half but it showed a change in the game flow as Wilkes began to pressure the Arcadia backline.

Cecere made saves in the 68th and 75th minutes to keep the deficit at just two goals before Lercara stepped up for the penalty kick goal to break the ice for the Colonels.

Bidelspach's game-tying goal came just 3:07 before the final horn and shortly after an Evans corner kick.

In the first 10-minute overtime period Cecere made two saves to extend the game into a second 10-minute overtime frame. Cecere made another save in the 103rd minute and the final Wilkes chance of the game came in 104th minute when an Allison Peet (Sayre, PA/Sayre) header went wide.

The Colonels remain on the road for their next contest when they travel to the University of Scranton for a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
