Wilkes picked up its second victory of the season against Clarks Summit after taking the first meeting 3-0 on September 1 at the Lycoming quad-match. With tonight's victory the Colonels improved their record to 9-4 overall while the Lady Defenders fell to 3-10.
Set one remained tight until Wilkes scored four straight points to push its lead to 23-18.
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) provided a kill to start the run and Betke finished it two points later with a service ace. The Colonels were able to close out the match at 25-21 after a Lady Defenders service error.
Wilkes led comfortably in set two most of the way until Clarks Summit made a three-point run to close the gap to just one point at 16-15. The Colonels responded with three straight points on a block assist play by Ferrier and
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley), a Lady Defenders error and a kill by
Christie Challenger (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) to go ahead 21-17. A Mikovich kill and a Ferrier service ace made it 24-18 and Wilkes took the second set 25-21 after a Clarks Summit service error.
Clarks Summit pushed ahead in the third set and led 17-15 before Wilkes called a timeout. Mikovich stepped up with back-to-back kills to immediately tie the score. The Colonels found themselves behind again at 21-18 but were able to finish strong with seven consecutive points to take the third 25-21. The run started with a Mikovich kill.
Kristie Najdek (Bethpage, NY/Island Trees) then served aces on two of the next three points which forced Clarks Summit to use a timeout. Out of the break
Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) and Mikovich combined for a block and then Mikovich put away the final point with her 19
th kill of the match.
Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) provided 30 assists in directing the Wilkes offense to a season-high .233 hitting percentage. A big part of that was the strong attacking of Mikovich. The junior hit .375 with 19 kills on 40 total attacks with four errors. She also added a team-high 15 digs to record her seventh double-double of the season.
Ferrier finished with seven kills and chipped in a career-high three blocks. Natale added five kills and four blocks as Wilkes held an edge at the net with seven blocks compared to just two for Clarks Summit.
Betke reached the 1,000 dig mark with her sixth of the night and ended with 10 total.
