Scranton Downs Wilkes Women's Soccer 2-0

SCRANTON, PA – For the second consecutive game the Wilkes University women's soccer team found themselves in an early 2-0 hole but unlike Saturday the Colonels were unable to mount a second half comeback as the University of Scranton held Wilkes off the scoreboard for the 2-0 non-conference victory Tuesday night at Weiss Field.

With the loss Wilkes fell to 2-4-1 overall this season. Scranton, who is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll and is the No. 6 team in the Mid-Atlantic Poll, improved to 7-0-1 with the victory.

Scranton struck for goals on its first two shots of the game. First at the 11:00 minute mark and then again at the 14:51 mark when Jamie Hreniuk scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season.

Wilkes registered its first shot of the game in the 24th minute when Jessica Egan's (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) attempt on frame was saved.

The Colonels picked up the pressure in the second half and was able to outshoot the Royals 6-5 over the final 45 minutes of action. A Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) shot in the 54th minute and Emily Wirth's (Vestal, NY/Vestal) attempt in the 56th were both saved.

Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) made her second save of the game in the 74th minute to keep the Colonels within striking distance with over 15 minutes to play. An Evans attempt on a header at the 75:56 mark and a Nicole Harmer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) shot on the rebound were both saved by the Royals goalkeeper. Those chances went down as the final two of the game for the Colonels.

Cecere made two more saves in the 80th and 82nd minutes to finish with four in the game.

Next up for the Colonels is the beginning of Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play when Wilkes welcomes Delaware Valley to Schmidt Stadium for the conference opener at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
