Peet Scores in MAC Freedom Opener for Wilkes Women's Soccer in 1-0 Victory
EDWARDSVILLE –
Allison Peet (Sayre, PA/Sayre) scored in the 70
th minute to break a scoreless tie as the Wilkes University women's soccer team held Delaware Valley University without a shot in a 1-0 victory in both team's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener.
Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) recorded her first career victory in net for Wilkes.
With the win Wilkes is now 3-4-1 overall on the season and 1-0-0 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley is now 3-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Wilkes controlled the play in the first half and began putting heavy pressure on the DelVal net in the 33
rd minute when
Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) hit the post.
Jessica Egan (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) then hit the crossbar from 30-yards out in the 36
th minute.
Nicole Harmer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was unable to knock the rebound in as her attempt went high.
The game headed into halftime at 0-0 even though the Colonels held a 9-0 advantage in shots.
The pressure by the Wilkes attack finally paid off when
Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) played a shot into the box that slipped through the Aggies' goalkeeper's hands. Peet was right on the spot to kick the ball into the open net for her second career goal at the 69:17 mark.
Wilkes nearly took a two-goal lead a few times late in the game. First, in the 84
th minute
Nicolette Towlen's (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) chance hit the post. Egan then had a shot go high at the 85 minute mark and
Karyna Vargas (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) had a header attempt saved in the 87
th minute off a corner kick.
The Colonels offense put 18 shots toward goal in the second half to run their total to 27 total in the game. The defense, led by the efforts on the backline of
Megan Lercara (Plains, PA/James M. Coughlin),
Niamh Harkins (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley), and
Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) did not allow a single Aggies shot attempt.
Wilkes remains home to face Kean University on Wednesday at Schmidt Stadium. The non-conference game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
