Bentz and Huff Lead Wilkes Men's Soccer Past Scranton 3-1
EDWARDSVILLE – The offensive combination of
Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) and
Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) was too much for the University of Scranton to handle Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium as the duo connected on all three goals in a 3-1 Wilkes University men's soccer non-conference victory.
The win broke a five-game losing streak for Wilkes against Scranton dating back to 2007.
With the victory the Colonels improved their record to 4-3-1 overall while the Royals fell to 2-4-2.
Both sides traded chances early on before Wilkes struck for the game's first goal in the 30
th minute. Bentz was able to collect the ball in the middle of the field in space and have enough time to find Huff streaking up the left side of the field. Huff was on the end of a perfectly weighted through ball in the left side of the box and placed it past the Royals goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead and his third goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 as the Colonels went to halftime holding a 5-2 advantage in shots.
Huff returned the favor in the 51
st minute when he received a pass from
Michael Buckholtz (Huntingtown, MD/Northern) on the left side of the field. The senior then played a one-touch cross from outside of the 18-yard box to the far post where a sliding Bentz found the end of it to knock the ball home and give Wilkes a 2-0 lead.
Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) made a save just 38 seconds later to keep the two-goal lead. Scranton was able to find the net in the 75
th minute when Michael Castaldi collected a blocked shot at the left post for a tap in goal.
The Royals kept the pressure on and almost found the tying goal in the 82
nd minute but Gallagher made a fantastic reaction save leaning to his right to stop a Michael Cortez effort from point-blank range.
Huff and Bentz made sure Wilkes would head away with the victory when they connected again with just 1:48 left in regulation to make it 3-1. Huff took on three defenders with great ball control and speed before laying a pass off to the middle of the field for a waiting Bentz. The junior then fired a shot inside the right post from 25-yards out for his first-career two-goal game and his fourth goal of the season.
Gallagher made three saves to earn his 19
th career victory.
Wilkes held an 11-10 advantage in shot as both teams were able to put four attempts on frame. The Royals held the slight edge with four corner kick opportunities compared to three for the Colonels.
Wilkes crosses over into the second half of its schedule when they open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday against Delaware Valley at 1:00 p.m. The Colonels will look for back-to-back wins for the first time this season in the contest.
