Wilkes Men’s Soccer Wins MAC Freedom Opener 3-1 over Delaware Valley

Wilkes Men's Soccer Wins MAC Freedom Opener 3-1 over Delaware Valley

EDWARDSVILLE – Jeffrey Eager-Heffner (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood Area) found the net twice as the Wilkes University men's soccer team won back-to-back games for the first time this season with a 3-1 victory over Delaware Valley University in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener for each team at Schmidt Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes improved its record to 5-3-1 on the season and are 1-0-0 in the MAC Freedom while Delaware Valley dropped to 3-7-0 and 0-1-0 in the conference.

Wilkes pressured the DelVal defense early on and that effort paid off in the eighth minute when Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) sprinted up the left side and played a cross into the box when Eager-Heffner one-touched it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Colonels kept the pressure on the rest of the first 45 minutes. Luke Betancourt (Easton, PA/Easton Area) nearly scored when a loose ball rolled to him near the left post but his effort was saved by the Aggies goalkeeper in the 38th minute. Then in the 43rd minute Cole Hefner's (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) deflection shot hit the crossbar and then Alvaro Fernandez-Maldonado's (Xalapa, MEX/Scranton) follow up chance was saved.

Wilkes was able to find the game's second goal with six seconds left in the half when Andrew Reichard (Easton, PA/Easton Area) played a perfect corner kick that found the head of Shane Henehan (Bensalem, PA/Mast Community Charter School) for the freshman's first career assist. The sophomore's header was perfectly struck with pace past the DelVal goalkeeper for the 2-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Henehan and the second of his career.

The Colonels held a 12-3 advantage in first-half shots and 6-0 in corners.

The offensive pressure continued when Huff tore down the left side of the field on a breakaway and after he drew the goalkeeper the senior laid a pass off to Eager-Heffner for an easy tap in for his second goal of the game just 1:18 into the second half. The sophomore now has five career goals while Huff assisted for his second time of the day and the fifth time this season.

The Aggies pulled one goal back to make the score 3-1 in the 56th minute when a corner kick by Austin Daniels went off the head of a Colonels defender and in for an own goal.

Russell Rauh (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington Senior) made his first career save for the Colonels in the 80th minute off a header attempt by the Aggies. Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) played the first 47:47 of the game to pick up the victory in goal for the Colonels. Stephen Johnson (Bear Creek Twp, PA/Coughlin) then played 19:24 in goal before Rauh finished the game.

Wilkes outshot DelVal 10-2 in the second half to bring the full 90-minute total to 22-5. Shots-on-goal were in favor of the Colonels by an 11-2 margin and Wilkes led 7-4 in corner kicks for the game.

The Colonels will look to run their win streak to three games when they travel to Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday for a non-conference game starting at 6:00 p.m.
