Shiplett's Second Half Goal Pushes Wilkes Field Hockey Past Manhattanville

PURCHASE, NY – Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) broke a 2-2 tie in the 44th minute with her fourth goal of the season to give the Wilkes University field hockey team a 3-2 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory on the road at Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon.

With the victory Wilkes improved to 2-0 in the MAC Freedom and 6-4 overall while Manhattanville dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 2-7 overall.

Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made three saves in the opening four minutes of action to keep the Valiants off the scoreboard. Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) then scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season after a penalty corner assist from Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead at the 7:16 mark.

Wilkes took a 2-0 lead when Cheyenne Mazzocca (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) scored her third of the season. The junior was in on a breakaway and went around the Valiants goalie before placing the ball in an open cage at the 16:13 mark.

Manhattanville then scored goals at the 29:10 and 30:10 marks to send the game to halftime at 2-2.

Shiplett's game-winning tally came just less than nine minutes into the second half. The freshman received a pass from Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) on a penalty corner and fired it into the goal. It was Stepanski's team-leading fifth assist of the year.

Kendra then made saves in the 49th, 63rd, and 68th minutes and the Wilkes defense blocked two more attempts to make the one-goal lead stand.

Kendra made eight total saves in the cage for Wilkes as she earned her 34th career win.

The Colonels travel to Elizabethtown College on Wednesday for a non-conference contest at 4:30 p.m.
