Power Play Goals Push Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Past Anna Maria
WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team scored four times with the man advantage to send Anna Maria College home with a 5-2 defeat on Saturday evening at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The win improves the Colonels to 10-4 overall while dropping the Amcats to 4-12-4.
The visitors began the scoring when a one-timer from the low slot to the left of the Colonels net beat the goaltender up high to give the Amcats a 1-0 lead at the 5:00 mark of the opening period.
Wilkes would knot the game up on an odd man rush that led to a game of tic-tac-toe between Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/), Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) and Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) that ended with Schell easily putting the puck past the Anna Maria netminder to tie the score at 1-1 on the power play with just over five minutes remaining in the first period.
After heading into the first intermission with time remaining on a power play of their own, the Amcats regained the lead just 45 seconds into the second period to take back the momentum.
The Colonels would respond with back-to-back power play goals late in the period when Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) scored his sixth of the season at the 14:50 mark before Wade Novak (Oak Ridge, NJ/) (fifth) broke the tie with four seconds left until intermission.
Flynn would be rewarded for his two earlier helpers with his eighth goal of the season 3:38 into the third period to give Wilkes a two-goal cushion.
Novak iced the game with his second power play goal of the evening on an empty netter with less than a minute to go to give the Colonels a 5-2 victory over the Amcats.
Flynn led the navy and gold with three points while winning 23 of 29 draws in the face-off dot. Liam Murray (Fort Lauderdale, FL/) made 23 saves to earn his second win between the pipes.
Wilkes gets back into United Collegiate Hockey Conference play when it heads to Lebanon Valley for a mid-week game on Wednesday, January 16th at 7:00 p.m.
