Late Goal Sinks Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey in 3-2 Overtime Loss at Stevenson
REISTERTOWN, MD – Leading 2-1 late in the third period, the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team saw host Stevenson University tie the game with :49 left and score the game-winning goal :33 into overtime to lift the Mustangs to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Colonels in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play Saturday afternoon at the Reistertown Sportsplex.
Wilkes fell to 13-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in UCHC play while suffering its first defeat of the year in MAC contests. Stevenson avenged an earlier loss this season to the Colonels improving to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in UCHC games.
After a scoreless first period, Christian Ripley put Stevenson on the board with a power play goal at the 14:19 mark of the second frame.
The Mustangs held onto their lead deep into the final period of play before
Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season off assists from
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/). Just :38 later
Brendan Logan (Matthews, NC) notched his fourth tally in just his seventh game on the ice for Wilkes off a helper from
Wade Novak (Oak Ridge, NJ/) to give the Colonels a 2-1 lead and what looked to be like its eighth consecutive game with a win or tie.
From there Stevenson's Mark Bowen broke through with the timely game-tying goal to send the teams into the extra period. Nick Gray wasted little time grabbing the momentum scoring the game-winner just :33 into the overtime frame to propel the hosts to the comeback victory.
Logan and Barrow topped all Colonel skaters with +2 ratings on the day.
Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) finished with 29 saves in net for Wilkes.
Wilkes continues MAC and UCHC play Thursday when the Colonels return home for a matchup with cross-town rival King's College starting at 7:15 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex.
