Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Opens 2019 with 3-1 Road Victory at Post

SHELTON, CT – Two second period goals and one more late in the third period carried the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 road victory at Post University to open 2019 with a non-conference victory. The Colonels controlled the game from the outset, outshooting the Eagles 21-4 in the first period and 51-24 for the full 60 minutes.

Wilkes improved to 9-4 overall with the victory while Post dropped to 2-9.

Neither team could light the lamp in the first period despite the Colonels firing 21 shots on goal at Brandon Brown in the Eagles net.

Post was able to take a 1-0 lead when Tyler Hackett found the net at the 6:50 mark of the second period.

Wilkes was able to respond with a power play goal at the 11:08 mark when Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season. Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) and Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) assisted on the play for the Colonels.

It didn't take long for the Colonels to take their first lead of the contest when Angelo Marquart (Hackettstown, NJ/) scored his second goal of the season at the 13:31 mark and Wilkes took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Brendan Logan (Matthews, NC) earned his first point in his first game with the Colonels as he picked up an assist on the play.

Wilkes was able to grab a two goal lead with its second power play tally of the game at the 16:55 mark of the third period. Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) provided the goal for his fifth of the season with an assist from Flynn.

Brandon Gordon (Sault Ste. Marie, MI/) picked up his eighth win between the pipes this season for the Colonels as he made 23 saves on the night including 13 in the second period. Brown made 48 saves for the Eagles.

Wilkes went 2-for-7 on the power play in the game while its penalty kill was strong as the Colonels shut down all four of the Eagles power play opportunities.

Flynn, Araujo, Logan and Jay Gallagher (Reading, MA/) all recorded six shots on goal for the Colonels. Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) won 10-of-18 faceoffs while Marquart was 9-of-11 in the face-off circle to lead Wilkes. As a team Wilkes held a 40-38 lead on faceoffs.

The Colonels return to the Toyota SportsPlex for its first home game of 2019 when they host Anna Maria College in non-conference action at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12.
