Wilkes Women's Volleyball Earns Second Conference Win with Aces on Road

DOYLESTOWN, PA. – The Wilkes University Colonels women's volleyball team hit the road to continue their 2019 MAC Freedom conference campaign against Delaware Valley.

The Colonels (11-8) took apart their conference rival Aggies (3-10) in straight sets 25-11, 25-14, 25-19.  It was the Colonels tenth win in the series since 2008.

In the first set, the Colonels kept a slight edge on the Aggies at 11-7 before tearing the set wide open, finishing with a 14-4 run to take the set in convincing fashion.  Senior outside hitter Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) helped finish off the set with two service aces in the last five Colonels points.

The Colonels found themselves down 10-8 in the second set before sophomore defensive specialist Katie Evans (Berwick, PA/Berwick) put together back-to-back service aces to help push Wilkes to a lead they would not relinquish.  Mikovich would add in a trio of service aces in the midst of a set-clinching 11-2 run.

A pair of Mikovich kills and a trio of Aggie attack errors led to a 5-0 Colonels run to start the third set and put the Aggies in a hole they could not recover from.  The Colonels kept them at bay to clinch the set and match in a 25-19 battle.

As a team the Colonels had nine service aces and held the Aggies to a .093 hitting percentage for the night.  Mikovich had six service aces, 17 kills, and 14 digs to lead the Colonels in all categories.   Sophomore setter Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) fueled the Colonels offense with 32 assists on the evening.  Evans finished the night with a pair of service aces.

The Colonels look to extend their three-match win streak at a tri-match in Chester, Pa. on Saturday.  Wilkes will play Neumann at 12:00 p.m. and host Widener at 2:00 p.m.  The Colonels at 0-3 against both squads since 2008.
