Wilkes Field Hockey Loses in Final Minutes at King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA. – The Colonels traveled across town for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom showdown with rival King's on Wednesday night.

The Colonels (9-8, 2-3 MACF) fell in the final minutes to the Monarchs (6-10, 2-3) in a 4-3 affair.

The Colonels dominated the first period, with sophomore Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) punching in the first goal in the sixth minute off of a penalty corner from junior Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas).  Junior Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) took advantage of a rebound situation in the 11th minute to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs controlled the second period much like the Colonels did the first.  They put home their first goal of the evening in the 23rd minute.  Freshman Danielle Runo took advantage of a cross from the right in the 29th minute to notch the game up heading into halftime.

Junior Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) gave the Colonels the lead back towards the end of the third period with an assist from freshman Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) off of yet another penalty corner in the 45th minute.  The fourth quarter would unfortunately belong to the Monarchs, as Runo responded with her second goal of the evening in the 52nd minute with a shot between the goalkeeper's legs to tie the match.

With the clock ticking down, the Monarchs snuck in one more goal in the 56th minute to give themselves a lead the Colonels would fail to surmount.

Junior Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) had three shots to lead the Colonels on the evening, while Dunn had two.  Both would record two shots-on-goal for the night.  Freshman Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) played all 60 minutes and had six saves.

The Colonels look to bounce back from their tough loss on Senior Day Saturday.  They play host to Delaware Valley for another conference showdown at Schmidt Stadium starting at 1:00 p.m.  The Colonels are 9-3 in the series since 2007.
