First Period Goals Lift Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey to Conference Victory

STEVENSON, MD. – The Colonels men's ice hockey team traveled to Stevenson Friday night to play in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) showdown with the Stevenson Mustangs.

The Colonels (3-1, 3-0 UCHC) netted a pair of first period goals to help propel them to a 3-2 victory against the Mustangs (2-1, 2-1 UCHC) to keep them undefeated in conference play.

Sophomore forward Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/) struck first 1:50 into the game with an assist from fellow sophomore forwards Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) and Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/).  A Mustang power play goal 9:40 into the first period knotted up the game, but sophomore forward Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) responded by taking advantage of the Colonels being a man up at the end of the first frame to put the Colonels up 2-1, with assists from Fea and Barrow again.

The Colonels netted the decisive goal 4:57 into the second period, thanks to senior forward Jivan Sidhu (Burnaby, BC/) and assists by Nick Godfrey (Cedar Run, NJ) and Charlie Spetz (Oak Ridge, NJ).  The scoring went quiet until the end of the third period with the Mustangs netting a second goal with 13 seconds left in the game, but failed to tie the game up with their last chances.

The Colonels were outshot 35-27 by the Mustangs on the evening.  Freshman goalkeeper Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) recorded 33 saves.  Fea and Barrow each had a pair of assists, while the Colonels had three different skaters put home goals in the victory.

The game also was a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game with the Colonels picking up a key win to move to 2-0 while Stevenson stands at 1-1 following the loss.

The Colonels travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. tomorrow to face Chatham University in another UCHC battle at 7:10 p.m.  The Colonels swept the pair of games last season against the Cougars by a combined score of 9-4.
