Pecorelli's 22 Points Help Wilkes Men's Basketball Comeback against Host Marymount
ARLINGTON, VA –
Rob Pecorelli (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) scored 22 points and added six rebounds, five assists and three steals to help lead the Wilkes University men's basketball team to a 73-65 comeback victory against host Marymount University Saturday afternoon to advance to tomorrow's championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
Wilkes stayed unbeaten on the season, improving to 3-0 overall while Marymount dropped to 1-1. The Colonels will play Montclair State University in the title game Sunday at 2:00 p.m. after the Red Hawks defeated Bridgewater (Va.) 112-101.
The Saints rushed out to a 16-0 lead with 15:09 left in the first half before Pecorelli put the Colonels on the board with a three-point shot at the 14:54 mark. A
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) jumper in the paint at the 10:10 mark pulled Wilkes within seven points at 20-13. The Saints still led by nine points with 3:52 left before the Colonels scored the final eight points of the half to close the gap to 35-34 on a
Jake Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) layup, Pecorelli layup, two Pecorelli free throws, and a
Noah Jackson (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) layup.
Marymount built its lead back to six points by the 17:17 mark of the second half.
Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) then tied the game for the Colonels at the 15:02 mark and gave Wilkes its first lead of the game at 44-43 with a free throw with 14:24 left in the contest.
Donovan Breeding (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) and Pecorelli threes built the Colonels advantage to eight points at 55-47 by the 11:56 mark.
A Robel layup gave Wilkes its first double-digit lead at 59-49 with 9:27 showing on the clock. Marymount was able to chip the lead down to four at 69-65 with 59 seconds left but Mullins and
Sean Coller (Hershey, PA/Hershey) each connected on two free throws to seal the victory.
Pecorelli's 22 points were a season-high for the senior. Mullins added 18 points and seven rebounds to reach 500 rebounds for his career. Robel added a career-high 12 points and season-high of seven rebounds. Marshall also tied for the team lead with seven boards. The Colonels were efficient from three-point range, going 8-for-12 (66.7%) while Marymount was only 7-for-26 (26.9%).
