Wilkes Women's Soccer Clinches Tournament Spot
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Tournament with a 1-0 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday evening.
The Colonels finished the regular season 4-3-0 in conference and 8-7-1 overall.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half. Wilkes had a seven-to-two advantage in shots and six-to-zero lead in corner kicks.
Wilkes broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute when Emily Wirth (Vestal, NY/Vestal) found the back of the net with an assist from Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT).
The Colonel defense clamped down in the final 45 minutes, allowing zero shot attempts.
Wilkes outshot the Aggies 11-2, with five attempts on target compared to one for Delaware Valley.
Samantha Cecere (Batavia, NY/Batavia) made one save in net for the Colonels.
Wilkes will travel to the top-seeded Stevens Ducks in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom Tournament on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
