First Period Barrage Lifts Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey to Crosstown Victory
PITTSTON, PA – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team traveled a few miles cross town Saturday night to play United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival King's College.
The Colonels (5-1, 5-0 UCHC) took command of the game with three first period goals, including two from sophomore
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/), to effectively put away the Monarchs (1-4. 1-4) early in the 5-2 game.
The Colonels were outshot in the first period 8-10, but made those shots count. After ceding the first goal to the Monarchs early at 5:23, the Colonels replied with four unanswered goals. Freshman forward
Billy Berry (Redding, CT) put home the first of three first period goals at the 16:41 mark, thanks to an assist from fellow freshman forward
Nick Godfrey (Cedar Run, NJ). Flynn followed this up with a pair of goals in the span of just over a minute. The first goal came at the 17:46 mark, with an assist from Berry and sophomore forward
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/). The second, and eventual game-winner, slipped past the opposing goalkeeper at 19:02 in the first period with assists from sophomore defender
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and sophomore forward
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/).
Sophomore forward
Ryan Galvin (Atlanta, GA/) added an insurance goal in the second period, with an assist from Gurska and sophomore forward
Danny Reidel (Wayne, NJ). King's would tack on a second goal in the third period, but Reidel would reply with the Colonels fifth goal of the night, assisted by Galvin and sophomore forward
Joey Pasquini (Schenectady, NY/), to close out the evening with a 5-2 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) recorded 17 saves to stay undefeated so far in goal for the season and his career with the Colonels. The Colonels outshot the Monarchs 31-19 on the evening.
Wilkes also improved to 3-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) with the victory as it reached the midpoint of the conference season undefeated.
The Colonels have a quick turnaround, as they host Albertus Magnus at the Mohegan Sun Arena tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for a non-conference tilt. This is the first time the two squads have met.
