Wilkes Women's Basketball Blows out Penn State Scranton 72-28 in Season Opener
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team produced a season-opening blowout victory against visiting Penn State Scranton at the Marts Center on Friday night by a 72-28 score in a non-conference contest.
The 44-point victory was the largest margin of victory for the Colonels since November 19, 2011 when they defeated Penn State Wilkes-Barre by 46 points. The 28 points allowed were the least by a Wilkes team since November 16, 2009 when they allowed only 23 to Penn State Hazleton.
Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) led Wilkes in her collegiate debut with 16 points. The freshman went 4-for-9 on three-point field goals in the game.
Wilkes started slow as its first points of the season came on
Katelyn Kinczel's (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) layup as the freshman scored her first career points at the 6:25 mark of the first 10-minute quarter to tie the game at 2-2. The Colonels gained their first lead of the game with 3:37 left in the quarter when freshman
Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) scored her first career points on a layup to make the score 6-4. The Colonels would stretch the lead to 18-6 by the end of the first quarter thanks in part to two Berryman three-pointers.
The Colonels then outscored Penn State Scranton 23-8 in the second quarter to lead 41-14 at halftime. Penn State won the third quarter 11-10 but a 21-3 fourth quarter led Wilkes to the 44-point win.
Fourteen different players reached the scoring column for Wilkes in the victory with Horton and
Vanessa Whitecavage (Shenandoah, PA/Marian Catholic) adding eight points each.
Ariel Reed (Woodbury, PA/Northern Bedford) led the Colonels with six rebounds while
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and
Katie Johns (Spring Run, PA/Fannett Metal) added five each. Horton and
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) each had three assists on the night. Berryman and Horton each finished with four steals as Wilkes finished with 19 total steals and forced 30 Penn State Scranton turnovers.
The Colonels will hit the road for their next game when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to face Centenary University (NJ) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
