Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Edged 1-0 by Anna Maria

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Anna Maria College squeezed by the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team by a 1-0 score during an evenly played non-conference game on Sunday at the Toyota SportsPlex. The loss for the Colonels comes 24 hours after earning the program's first-ever victory by a 5-4 score over the AMCATS on Saturday.

Wilkes dropped to 1-7-0 overall with the loss while Anna Maria improved its record to 2-8-1 overall.

The evenly played game saw its only goal come 12:05 into the second period when Meghan Sonia put the puck into the net from close in after a pass from Kaitlyn Korpach from behind the net to give the AMCATS the lead.

It was a lead that Anna Maria did not relinquish. The Colonels had their chances throughout as they put 29 shots on goal throughout the contest. Gabrielle Ohanesian was up to the task on all of the Wilkes attempts as she made 29 saves for the shutout victory.

Alexa Rango (Hopewell Junction, NY/) played well between the pipes for Wilkes as the sophomore stopped 27 of the 28 Anna Maria shots on goal including 12 in the third period to keep the Colonels in the game.

Ashley Murry (Morgantown, PA) and Erica Sheaffer (New Hartford, NY) led Wilkes with five shots on goal each while Shauna Tubbs (Maumee, OH) and Cally Erickson (Carbondale, CO/) each added four apiece.

The two teams were even in the faceoff circle with 28 wins each. The Colonels were led by Tubbs who won 10 total on 20 chances. Erickson won 5-of-6 and Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ) won 4-of-5. Grace Dodge won 18-of-25 chances for Anna Maria.

The Colonels blocked 19 AMCATS shots during the game led by a game-high four by Abby Miller (Webster, NY). Anna Maria had 14 blocks as a team.

Wilkes will be off until the New Year when it will return to United Collegiate Hockey Conference action Sunday, January 5 at the Toyota SportsPlex against Alvernia University at 3:30 p.m.
