Second Period Goals Lead Alvernia Past Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey
WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Alvernia University scored two goals within 57 seconds during the second period to help the Golden Wolves defeat the Wilkes University women's ice hockey team by a 4-1 final Sunday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.
The United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) opponents from opposite divisions met in a non-conference contest today with the game counting in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) standings. With the loss Wilkes dropped to 1-8 on the season overall and to 0-1 in the MAC. Alvernia improved to 3-7 overall and to 1-2 in the MAC.
Abby Radcliffe gave the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead at the 8:29 mark of the first period with a breakaway goal after intercepting a pass at the Alvernia blue line.
The Colonels would even the score 5:15 into the second period on the power play following a Golden Wolves tripping penalty.
Valerie Koenig (Arlington, TX) was credited with the primary assist after firing a shot from the point that
Shauna Tubbs (Maumee, OH) was able to deflect in front of the goaltender and into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Tubbs and the fifth of her career. It was the first career assist for Koenig and
Abby Miller (Webster, NY) picked up the secondary assist on the play for her second of the season.
Olivia Gilida broke the tie at the 15:46 mark of the second after receiving a pass out front and beating the Wilkes' goaltender. Just 57 seconds later Abby Reisinger scored shorthanded on a breakaway to give Alvernia a 3-1 lead.
Gilida would score again in the third period on a power play to provide the 4-1 final.
Julia Beaven was solid in goal for Alvernia as she made 35 saves. Wilkes outshot Alvernia 36-22 in the game.
Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI) started between the pipes for the Colonels and made 12 saves on 13 shots over the first period and a half.
Alexa Rango (Hopewell Junction, NY/) then spelled Joly and made six saves the rest of the way.
Tubbs paced the Colonels with seven shots on goal while
Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ) and
Brianna Stanton (Kenai, AK) each had five. Wilkes won the faceoff battle 35-29 thanks to Tubbs who won 19 of her 30 chances.
The Colonels will travel to Lebanon Valley College for their next game on Friday, January 10 at 4:00 p.m. in Hershey, Pa.
