Wilkes Wrestling Cruises to 43-9 Win at King's
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University wrestling team responded after having its eight-match win streak come to a close two days earlier as the Colonels cruised past cross-town rival King's College 43-9 Sunday afternoon at the Scandlon Gymnasium. Wilkes earned wins in eight of ten bouts including seven extra-point victories.
Wilkes improved to 19-4 overall in dual matches, claiming its eighth straight win over the Monarchs dating back to the 2010-11 season when the teams wrestled to a 22-22 tie. King's dropped to 1-19 overall in dual meets following the home defeat.
King's opened with three points when Dakota Quick blanked
Kyle Trout (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) 5-0 at 125-pounds.
Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary) collected a forfeit at 133-pounds before back-to-back pins from
Thomas Stokes (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) (1:54) and
Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) (2:24) pushed the Colonels ahead 18-3 after four bouts.
At 157-pounds
John Ritter (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) continued to earn extra points for Wilkes claiming an 11-0 major decision over Kade Kravits to extend the advantage to 22-3. King's earned its second bout of the match when Nicholas Palazzolo pinned
Cole Walters (Mifflintown, PA/Juniata) in 1:40 at 165-pounds to cut the deficit to 22-9.
Ashton Gyenizs (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) added the third Wilkes fall of the day pinning Nicholas Price in 4:45 at 174-pounds to up the Colonel advantage to 28-9.
Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) continued his winning ways besting John Hooper in a 7-1 decision at 197-pounds to wrap-up the competing bouts in the match.
Austin Cominsky (Cape May Courthouse, NJ/Middle Township) and
Roger Horton (Towanda, Pa./Athens) received forfeit wins at 184-pounds and heavyweight to round out the final Wilkes scoring.
The Colonels close out their dual match schedule competing in the Cross County Challenge next Friday and Saturday. Wilkes will wrestle the University of Scranton on Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Keystone College before hosting Keystone on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Marts Center in a battle of Lackawanna and Luzerne County schools.
