Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Earns Program's First Point
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night versus Lebanon Valley College to pick up the program's first point of its inaugural season.
With the tie, Wilkes stands at 0-13-1 on the year.
It was an evenly played game in the first period as each team had their fair share of chances in the opening 20 minutes. Late in the period, Shauna Tubbs (Maumee, OH/) put the Colonels on the board when a close shot from the left of the net beat the Dutchmen goaltender to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead at the 17:24 mark.
Lebanon Valley turned up the pressure in the second period as they fired 17 shots on the Wilkes net, thanks in part to two penalties that the Colonels would end up killing off to hold onto a 1-0 advantage after 40 minutes of play.
The Dutchmen kept up the intensity in the third period but took a roughing penalty at the 8:23 mark to give the Colonels a power play opportunity that resulted in two shots.
Wilkes found themselves in the box late in the period as two penalties of their own, at the 11:43 and 16:19 mark, opened the door for Lebanon Valley to get the game tying goal. The Colonels penalty kill unit would again kill off the penalties to keep the Dutchmen off the board and 0-5 with the man advantage on the night.
It looked as though the Colonels were going to earn the win as the Dutchmen had to pull their goalie with 1:12 left in regulation to gain the extra skater. Lebanon Valley would eventually find the back of the net when a shot from the point was deflected past the Wilkes netminder with 17 seconds remaining in the third period to knot the game at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
Both teams were unable to break the tie in the five minute overtime period, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.
Ally Joly (Lincoln, RI/) made 44 saves between the pipes for the navy and gold while Tubbs scored her fourth goal of the season on Kendall Castro's (Killingworth, CT/) third assist of the year.
Wilkes closes out its 2018-2019 season with a home-and-home against Utica College starting at home on Friday, February 15th with a 5:00 p.m. puck drop at the Toyota Sportsplex.
