Duman's Career Day Lifts Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Over Old Westbury 20-17
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Wilkes University sophomore
Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) notched a career-high seven points including six goals to lead the Colonels to a 20-17 victory over host Old Westbury Saturday afternoon at Panther Park.
It marked the third straight win for Wilkes who moved to 3-1 overall on the season following the non-conference road victory. Old Westbury dropped to 1-4 on the year after suffering the defeat.
After Old Westbury scored the game's first goal, Wilkes responded with three straight tallies to take a 3-1 lead with 20:04 left in the first half. The Colonels received unassisted goals from
Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley),
Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and
Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI/Tilton).
Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) added her first goal of the contest between a pair of Old Westbury strikes that kept Wilkes ahead 4-3 with 15:51 on the first half clock.
From there it was a 4-0 Wilkes run that pushed the advantage up to 8-3 with just 4:21 left in the first stanza. The rally provided some breathing room for the Colonels thanks to goals from Duman, Lerch, Boccio and
Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area). Joly and Duman grabbed assists on two of the four goals.
Old Westbury finished the half scoring two unanswered goals to cut into the deficit as Wilkes took an 8-5 lead at the break.
After an Old Westbury goal made it 8-6 three minutes into the second half, Wilkes began its game-changing scoring run that put the Colonels ahead for good. The Colonels rattled off seven consecutive goals over a nine minute span to take a commanding 15-6 lead, its largest of the game. Duman, Burkhardt and Bayzick each added two goals apiece while
Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) notched the other in the offensive onslaught. Boccio assisted on three of the seven goals with Burkhardt being credited with the other helper.
Duman then scored three of Wilkes' final five goals over the final 13:50 to keep the Colonels in front for the non-conference road victory.
Duman led all Wilkes scorers with a career-best six goals and one assist, also the first of her career, Boccio followed with six points on three goals and three assists while Burkhardt added five points on four goals and one helper. Lerch chipped in two goals and two assists while Bayzick finished with three tallies. Joly recorded her first collegiate goal while Devitt notched her fourth goal of the season to round out the Wilkes offense.
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) finished with 13 saves in 46:10 in net for Wilkes to record the win.
Melania Velasquez (Baltimore, MD/Patapsco) entered in relief playing 13:50 in the cage with three stops.
Wilkes remains on the road Wednesday with a non-league matchup at Keystone College starting at 4:00 p.m.
