Wilkes Men's Tennis Opens MAC Freedom Play with 9-0 Win

MADISON, N.J. – The Wilkes University men's tennis team hit the road for their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opener and cruised to a 9-0 victory over the FDU-Florham Devils on Saturday afternoon.

The win gets the Colonels back in the win column at 5-4.

Wilkes rolled through doubles as # 2 Braddock Chow (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) and Mike Ellis (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) started things off with an 8-1 win. That win was soon followed by #1 Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and Andrew MacDonald (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) closing out their match in 8-2 fashion. Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) and Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) finished off the sweep in #3 doubles by winning 8-1.

The first two singles players for the navy and gold won in straight sets as #1 Murphy won 6-2, 6-1 before #2 Maderitz took his match 6-0, 6-1 to clinch a Colonels victory.

#3 White would keep the momentum going in Wilkes' favor as he also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

#4 Larry Scartz (Woodbridge, VA/Home School) was the first Colonel to drop a set in the match (3-6) but responded by blanking his opponent 6-0 in set two to force a third set tiebreaker. Scartz completed the comeback by winning the tiebreaker 10-6 to take the set and win the match 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6).

#5 Alec Levin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) had an easy time in his first set, winning 6-1, but came from behind in set two as he trailed three different times (2-3, 3-4 and 4-5) before rallying to win 7-5.

It was a similar story for MacDonald in the #6 spot as his strong serve led him to a quick 6-1 first set win but his second set ultimately went to a tiebreaker that the senior won 7-6 (7-1) to finish off the match.

The Colonels return to the court next Saturday, April 6th for their MAC Freedom home opener against the Manhattanville Valiants at 1:00 p.m at the Ralston Athletic Complex
